A really good jazz sound has come out of France and it’s called The Sophisticated Ladies," says Tim Taylor of Audiophile Audition, noting the work of Rachael Magidson, "a swing singer in addition to playing trumpet and percussion." The Sophisticated Ladies Vocal Trio and The Sophisticated Ladies Swing & Latin Jazz Quartet keep Magidson busy alongside several groups she leads, from the Pocket Jazz Duo and Trio to the Rachel Magidson Sextet, notably including her West Coast Jazz Quartet featuring guitarist Thierry Bijohn, bassist Leonie Hey and drummer Tony Fill, coming to California in November and landing at Bird & Beckett on Saturday, the 23rd. $25 cover charge / byob.

CJ Bond of Jazz Music Review writes of Magidson's "frighteningly hedonistic impact," describing her as "one of those song stylists … that pretty much has her way with you emotionally. You could easily succumb to a state of bewitched, bothered bewilderment.”
"…her dark and refined flugelhorn also adds a nocturnal mystique… Her gorgeously mellow and fat tone…blows like a fragrant and heady breeze,” says All About Jazz.

”… it is almost uncanny how much Magidson captures (Billie) Holiday’s unique delivery,” proclaims All About Vocals.

Rachael Magidson, a swing singer expert in Afro Cuban percussion, trumpet and flugelhorn, was raised in the Bay Area and educated at UC Berkeley, then headed for Université Bordeaux Montaigne, finishing there in 2021. She's remained in Bordeaux leading a number of groups touring Europe and the U.S., including her West Coast Jazz Quartet, a killer group "united by the members' shared passion for jazz and world music." The quartet's arrangements "infuse each song with a rich tapestry of global colors, transcending the boundaries of jazz to include beloved hits from the worlds of pop, soul, and funk. "
Thierry Bijohn a virtuoso guitarist, has graced stages worldwide, from The Forbidden City Music Hall in China to Madagascar. Known for his diverse cultural fluency and heartfelt arrangements, his artistry adds an unmistakable depth to the quartet's sound.
Leonie Hey, a seasoned upright bassist from Stuttgart, has jazz in her blood, having played since her youth under the guidance of her father, a big band leader.
On drums, Tony Fill brings a wealth of international experience, having studied and performed in iconic music hotspots like New York, Cuba, Puerto Rico, and Rio de Janeiro.
Leonie and Antoine met playing for the Late Night shows in Germany while performing with a roster of renowned artists from Will Smith to Cindy Lauper. The couple met Rachael and Thierry after relocating to Lacanau, a serene surf town just an hour from Bordeaux.

Rachael invites you to "Join us to feel the dancing waves, the sunsets and the laid-back vibes of the West Coast." Which West Coast, you might ask? Let your ears and imagination take you to the coast of your choice.
